Vista Wallpapers that didn't make it

Windows Vista was released on January 29th, 2007 worldwide. One of the things that makes Vista what it is is its collection of high resolution images.

You might be easily fooled to believe that these are the works of professional photographers who eat camera film for breakfast, lunch and tea, but you’d be wrong. It’s true, some of these photos did come from big stock houses such as Corbis, Getty and National Geographic, but did you also know some came from Flickr and even Microsoft employees?

One of the amateur photographers commisioned by Microsoft for the Vista wallpaper photoshoot was a person named Hamad Darwish. Only 5 of the photos he shot made it in the final version of Windows Vista.

Windows XP Byte Count Flaw

The picture talks for itself. Basically what happened was that I downloaded close to 5GB of data yesterday and uploaded 3GB. My LAN connection records number of bytes sent and received since Windows was started up while my connection (Tata Indicom) status shows the data transfered in the current session.

I found that sometime after the counter for the received field crossed 4GB, it reset to 0. That's not supposed to happen. Its something like what happens with a unsigned integer variable when you increment it after it touches 65,535; it goes back to 0.

In the past 48 hours, I've downloaded 8.6GB and uploaded 4.7GB. I've probably never transferred that much data all together ever since I started using the internet!!! Its a sign of the times. Broadband is penetrating India fast!

HP Compaq nx9010 Laptop taken apart

I took my 3 year old laptop apart, cleaned its interiors, took photos and put it all back together. Many of you may have seen the insides of a desktop but i don't think any have seen a laptop taken COMPLETELY apart.

You can see the pictures in my album with complete labelling of parts. Its a very good laptop from Hewlett Packard (at least it was one of the best in its heyday). Model: HP Compaq nx9010 DJ123A
Specifications (core):
Pentium 4 M 2.7 GHz
512 MB DDR RAM
Ati Mobility Radeon 128 MB
80 GB 5400RPM Harddisk drive
DVD/CD-RW Combo
15" Display 1024x768 native res

Took me about 2 hours to take it apart and put it together after cleaning. Close to 50 screws! I've tried this twice before but couldn't find all the screws, the case just wouldn't open.
